President Donald Trump has rescheduled the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to July 24, following an incident on April 25 that ended in a suspected assassination attempt.
According to reports, Cole Allen allegedly rushed through security at the event and fired a shotgun, prompting Secret Service personnel to remove President Trump. Allen was captured in the Washington Hilton lobby and charged with attempted assassination of a U.S. president and assault with a deadly weapon. He has pleaded not guilty.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said: “In a sign of Strength and Fortitude, it was just announced that The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which violently ended rather abruptly on April 25th, will be rescheduled to July 24th. This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling.”
Trump also confirmed he accepted an invitation from White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang to speak at the rescheduled event. He stated: “I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out. In any event, it will be a ‘HOT’ ticket!”
The dinner will now be held at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue, a venue Trump renovated during his private career and sold in 2021. Allen faces life in prison if convicted of the charges.
