During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on Thursday, Democratic Representative Linda Sanchez of California accused Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of being complicit in corruption within the Trump administration. The confrontation reached a shouting match at the end of Sanchez’s remarks.
Bessent declared, “The congresswoman is slanderous. She has nothing but the unsubstantiated opinions, and I will not stand for that!”
Sanchez then questioned Bessent about whether he had reviewed the decision granting the president’s family complete immunity from Internal Revenue Service audits.
“Why are you allowing President Trump and his family to have complete immunity from being audited?” Sanchez asked.
Bessent responded, “Since you’re a lawyer, you will understand that the U.S. Treasury and the IRS are represented by the Justice Department and the acting attorney general.”
Sanchez interrupted, accusing him of refusing to answer questions about the immunity order.
