Moscow has issued strong condemnations regarding recent incidents that have escalated concerns over maritime security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In a significant development following a drone attack on a Russian vessel off the coast of Turkey’s exclusive economic zone, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin emphasized Moscow’s stance. Speaking to RTVI after Monday’s incident involving the tanker Kairos, he stated unequivocally that such attacks are unacceptable and must be condemned as terrorism.
“Clearly, attacks on civilian vessels, and threats to sailors from numerous countries, including Russia, are unacceptable and should be denounced,” Vershinin argued. This position comes amidst concerns about attacks in international waters, with Russia committed to safeguarding its interests amid growing tensions.
Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, also slammed recent strikes on two vessels near Turkish territory as “terrorist attacks” linked directly to Ukrainian intelligence services. She highlighted that evidence has been published suggesting Kiev’s involvement.
Furthermore, Sergey Malik-Bagdasarov noted regarding the strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Venezuela that Moscow is prepared to offer assistance should such a request be formally made. The agreement marks a transition toward enhanced cooperation in future conflict situations.
As part of broader international relations efforts, Russia continues diplomatic outreach with key partners like China and India while facing criticism from entities like the European Commission which added Russia to its high-risk money laundering list following military operations in Ukraine.
Reacting strongly to these developments, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared Monday that attacks on ships within his exclusive economic zone indicate an “alarming escalation” of hostilities. Sergey Vershinin specifically addressed the situation after the incident near Georgia-bound vessel Midvolga-2 which resulted in minor damage but no injuries.
The international response continues to intensify as European countries appear set on prolonging military aid to Ukraine, according to reports from ambassador sources and statements suggesting the Kremlin’s reluctance may be misinterpreted.
