An 18-year-old New Jersey male is accused of stabbing his elderly grandmother to death, with police discovering knives protruding from the victim’s body Monday morning.
Louis Brown of Jackson Township was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the death of his 69-year-old grandmother, Darlene Brown, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Jackson Township Police Department officers responded around 7 a.m. Monday to a residence on Justin Way after a 911 call reported a murder. Officers found Louis Brown standing at the front doorway, with Brown exiting the residence holding his hands up and being taken into custody immediately.
Upon entering the home, police discovered Darlene Brown’s body in an upstairs bedroom with apparent stab wounds to the face and neck. Officers observed two knives protruding from her body.
An investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit revealed that Louis Brown was the individual who called 911 and was responsible for his grandmother’s death.
Brown was charged and held at the Ocean County Jail on Tuesday morning. His jail record shows no hearing information and no bail set.
Jasmina Perazic, a resident of the complex where the stabbing occurred and head women’s basketball coach at Georgian Court University, described that Louis Brown moved in with his grandmother after his mother died of sickle cell anemia. Perazic characterized Darlene Brown as “an unbelievably nice person — the nicest person to talk to, intelligent, just always helpful, always kind.” She added, “It just looked like she was working so hard to take care of him.”
Perazic noted that Louis Brown had been quiet and bullied in school but saw no warning signs of distress. In fact, Perazic stated that his grandmother described Louis as a good kid who was doing well in school.
