A recent report described AB Hernandez, a transgender-identifying high school student competing against biological girls in California, as overcoming President Donald Trump’s “vitriol” and policies restricting transgender athletes.
Online critics have lambasted the story. Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY Athletics, stated that Hernandez is the state champion in two girls’ track events and criticized the report for misrepresenting his achievements. Comedian Rob Schneider suggested an alternative headline: “SY FAILED MALE ATHLETE ALLOWED TO BEAT GIRLS”.
In May 2025, President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw federal funding from California after AB Hernandez competed in girls’ sports under an executive order restricting transgender athletes. The president accused California’s leadership of allowing men to compete in women’s sports illegally.
Under current state rules, transgender-identifying athletes may compete while ensuring that if a title is won by such an athlete, the female competitor displaced retains her standing.
