Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has rebuked pop singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, a Bronx-born star, for her recent comments on what constitutes a New Yorker, labeling her definition “absolutely outrageous.”
Lopez stated that one must be born in New York City — specifically within one of the five boroughs — to qualify as a true New Yorker. De Blasio, who led the city from 2014 to 2021, responded by insisting there is no purity test for New York citizenship.
The former mayor emphasized that New York City is “the ultimate city of immigrants” and that its culture stands in direct opposition to Lopez’s description.
